Black In Nephrology is a non-profit organization established in 2022 by nephrology fellows across the U.S.
A small group of nephrology fellows fostered friendship in person and via web interface realizing the need for a larger scale platform for support.
Initially purposed as pathway for communication for African/African Americans in the field nephrology and related disease, B.I.N has evolved to establish a much larger impact on the health of A/AA community with emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.
-
To further the science of nephrology and its standards of practice.
To promote preventative medicine amongst the medical profession.
To create awareness and improve upon the issues of racial disparity amongst physicians.
To promote a higher degree of fellowship amongst its members.
To establish mentorship and improve access to professional careers with the field of nephrology.
To create awareness of the significance of kidney disease within the A/AA community.
To improve health care disparities and community outreach with emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.
To foster allegiance to the American Society of Nephrology and to perpetuate these principles and the teachings through the maintenance and development of this organization.
-
African and African Americans only represent 3%-5% of the physician population. Furthermore census data from Nephrology Training Facilities tells us that only approximately 3-5% of the future nephrologist is also represented as well.
Kidney Disease census data from within the US is highly over represented by people of African Descent. Currently, people of African Descent represent over 1/3 of the kidney disease population while only representing 13% of the US population.
Data over the last 20 years has proven that health care disparity and health outcomes are improved in A/AA patients who have providers of the same ethnic background.
We hope to foster a community that promotes the advancement for A/AA physicians in nephrology , build awareness around kidney disease with focus on improving outcomes in the A/AA population.
